Jesus Presented in the Temple: Part One
Hello friends! Welcome back to the twelve days of Christmas (Blog Edition), where we go over the birth of Jesus Christ; the true reason for the season. Today is the ninth day. I will be splitting the story of ‘Jesus Presented in the Temple’ into two parts. So today is part one. Tune in tomorrow for part two.
Luke 2:21-28: Jesus Presented in the Temple
On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise him, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he had been conceived.
When the time of their purifications according to the Law of Moses had been completed, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”), and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”
Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
The Holy Spirit came upon Simeon to tell him that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Christ, so he went to the temple courts to see Jesus. Simeon took the child and tomorrow we will find out what he said.
Did you guys know that the twelve days of Christmas, the song, was actually written to Christ. He was 'my true love' in the song. Look up the Christianity meaning of the song to read more, but I wanted to bring it up today because this scripture mentions ‘a pair of doves’ (underlined above) which represents the Old and New Testament in the song. When Jesus was born, so was the New Testament. The originator of the song was describing the gift of those to us from God.
So, smile today. Jesus’ birth marked a New Testament that was sealed with Jesus' blood on Calvary. We are now saved by grace. What a gift! Find joy in that today!
